Our tournaments are open to all Chess for Success participants at no cost and are also accessible to students who are not part of our program for a small fee.

These tournaments typically take place during the winter months, running from February to April.

State Tournaments

2024 Oregon State Championships

April 12, 2024 - April 13, 2024

The two-day Chess for Success State Tournament has been held annually since 1967, and is open to all students in grades K-12 who reside in Oregon.  See the information for finalists who qualify for the state tournament.

Vangie Shaw Memorial Girls Play Chess Tournament

Since 2009, Chess for Success has proudly hosted our annual Vangie Shaw Memorial Girls Play Chess tournament, a celebration of all our female-identifying chess club members. This tournament holds special significance for us as chess has traditionally been male-dominated. We are committed to breaking down barriers and challenging stereotypes in the chess community.

Rules & Expectations

Chess for Success organizes tournaments across three categories: regional tournaments, state tournaments, and our informal "for fun" tournaments.

Although each of these tournaments may have its own unique set of rules and expectations, you can find general information that is applicable to all tournament types on this page. Find Your Region

Your region is determined by where your school is located.

If you are a home school student, find your region according to where you live. If you participate in a chess club as a home school student, you may be eligible to participate on the team for that school. Talk to your chess club advisor if you're not sure.
